Starting here with "X", this is the record that really solidified who Def Lep's fans were, who really GOT the point I made before...that they are a powerpop band at their core...NOT a NWOBHM/metal one...and Joe was quite defiant in this in the book too...in his words, "if some songs to people sound like boyband songs, so f***ing what!!" and with their beautiful ballad cover of "Long Long Way To Go", "a good song is a good song and the fact that Lionel Richie covered it too just vindicated it!!" I really enjoyed "X" & saw the band in NYC play Irving Plaza, a sizeable club, great show...fave songs on there are "Torn To Shreds", "4 Letter Word" & "Long Long Way To Go"...I would not call this a boyband record at all, but a Max Martin/Swedish pop influenced record...and that it was partly recorded in ABBA's Polar Studios shows...and Steve Clark was a HUGE ABBA fan too...which proves they were more like ABBA and Duran Duran and Cheap Trick than Iron Maiden (whom I cannot stand really, not catchy pop enough!!)...have to also say, they also worked with Marti Fredereksen on "X". who also did Aerosmith's "Push To Play", but Def Lep's record is much much better than Aerosmith's...DL has a better pop sensibility than Aerosmith, when they do it, it comes off as too commercial, while Def Lep are just better pop writers...
Next up..."Yeah!!" What a KILLER covers album, possibly the best covers album ever recorded, to be honest...love how this shows upfront where the band truly fits...UK glam, powerpop and punk/new wave, every song a solid choice, and all bands represented faves of mine as well, and I dig how they didn't choose the most obvious ones, which makes it fresher & more satisfying, not at all dated...fave cut might be Mott The Hoople's "The Golden Age Of Rock & Roll", singer/songwriter Emm Garner on piano & Mott's Ian Hunter introing the song as well!! Another fun fact, the lead singer of the Darkness, Justin Hawkins, does the Steve Priest vocal bit on Sweet's "Hell Raiser", which is fun...
Then, "Songs From The Sparkle Lounge"...have to say this album holds up very well, better than I originally thought!! I do enjoy "X", but LOVE "Sparkle Lounge"!! It's fresher, looser, louder & more immediate than "X", and I honestly think that doing "Yeah!!", getting it all out of their system (the band wanted to do a covers album since 1978!!), made "Sparkle" what it was, gave it a kick up the rear end, a sense of purpose, and that they wrote & recorded it on the road, right when the ideas hit, really does show in its immediacy...all of the songs kill, and as good as "Nine Lives" is, the others are just as cool...
Now, the bonus discs..."B-sides" has tracks just from the "X" and "Sparkle" eras cuz "Yeah" bonuses take up 2 other discs...I do have to say that the 3 B-sides/bonuses included "Kiss The Day", "10 x Bigger Than Love" & "Gimme A Job" are better than 3 of the album tracks tacked on "X"'s back half..."Gravity", "Cry" & "Girl Like You", which are more B-side-ish than those 3 actual B-sides!! These 3 songs are not as strong or memorable, not as hooky & with "Cry", I read Viv loves that song, but for me, the hook on the chorus is kinda ugly & jarring to the ear, like a bad version of the alt-rock on "Slang"..."Kiss The Day" has a cool chorus I just love, "10 times" is really catchy, same with "Gimme A Job"...the demos are cool, the Joe solo vocal on "Nine Lives" is even better than the Tim McGraw duet...not a Tim fan, he's not Outlaw Country and that's the only country I like...country punk...
Now, "Yeah II"...I'm really happy this was assembled because it's 99% of the missing pieces of covers that were on various sources, all in 1 place...some I had as bonus tracks from other store editions, others were on singles & other reissues...the only things I notice missing were the interview pieces from the Walmart bonus disc (they were fun but it's OK they are not on here...better only at that particular time really)...and I hear they did the MC5's "Kick Out The Jams"!! MFers or brothers & sisters?? That would be fun to hear...one day. I really love the essay on it in the book...shows & proves the band's (especially Joe's) taste, vast musical interests & record collections...me, I would LOVE to go record shopping with Joe one day, or to record shows...that would be amazing and a lot of fun & even educational...I thought I was wide-ranging, deep-well, eclectic & openminded, but Joe Elliott might even have me beat!! Two faves here are covers of Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers' "American Girl" & David Bowie's "Space Oddity"...also I'm happy they included the 2 Jeff Beck instrumentals from the iTunes "Slang" deluxe, which were left off the Volume Two box...
Last one is "Yeah Live", which takes their live covers & puts them in 1 place...2 of them were on store deluxes...Badfinger's "No Matter What" at Target & Sweet's "Action" at BestBuy...and with Bowie's/Mott's "All The Young Dudes", I'm happy it was a different recording than the one on the Record Store Day "Rock & Roll Hall Of Fave" induction concert EP...and nice that Queen's Brain May is nicely represented too...love Joe's friendly comment...the man with the curly hair & curly guitar lead, haha!! I actually MET Brian May & Roger Taylor from Queen at NYC's JFK Airport back in 2003 when I was flying to London for my brother's wedding & they were flying back to London on the Concord (remember that plane??), as they were in NYC for their Queen "We Will Rock You" musical, to promote it or try to get it off the ground here...and Joe was right...REALLY nice guys & Brian May is REALLY tall...
Finally...what will be on Volume Four??? The only studio album Def Lep recorded after this period was their self-titled one from 2015 (originally on Jimmy Buffet's label Mailboat, now to be reissued on Virgin/Mercury/UMC with their new deal)...so what else could be included?? Live albums like "Mirror Ball"?? Unreleased material/unreleased albums?? Maybe DVD/BluRay video like the "CMT Crossroads with Taylor Swift" or a complete video collection like "Historia" & its followup?? Maybe a complete singles collection?? Maybe they have a new album about to be released and will leave a slot open for it?? Maybe the Vegas residencies as multimedia packages?? Have to be honest...arranging these boxes is pretty brilliant & Joe has done an amazing job...and leaving Box #4 open for speculation is keeping people wondering & talking...if that 2015 album was included here on "Volume 3", no one would have an interest in the final box...so when will it be here?? 2022 or 2023?? We shall see...
